TESTIMONIALS
Praise for Sid and Have Leash, Will Travel
Before we started working with Sid, we had already witnessed his effect on our neighbor’s dog. She had adopted a pup who was very shy at first. The transformation was incredible from shy, timid pup, to confident, friendly dog. So when our dog walker told us she was taking a full time job and couldn’t walk our two English Bulldogs, we knew exactly where to turn.
When Sid started with our dogs, they were well-behaved but getting a little relaxed in their heel skills, especially our younger dog. We asked Sid what he could do. The results were astounding. Our youngster, who at the time when we met Sid weighed in at a whopping 75 pounds, was a handful to walk. He’d get excited and want to pull whoever was walking him wherever he wanted to go. Within a couple weeks, he was heeling like a champ and would respond to us when we commanded him on our walks.
Another nice benefit of working with Sid is that the aforementioned 75-pound bulldog is now a nice, trim 62 pounds. That’s just from working with Sid, going on walks at noon. No diet. Just having a walker who’s willing to go that extra step and make sure the dogs are properly exercised.
With every walker we’ve had, all we’ve asked is that they’re professional, trustworthy & willing to put in a little bit of extra time with our dogs. Sid fits all those requirements. He leaves detailed notes so we know exactly what our dogs did that day. We know they’re being cared for, being walked & getting the attention they need. With previous dog walkers, it was hard to tell if they even showed up that day. That thought has never crossed our minds with Sid.
For us, the real litmus test comes when we see our dogs respond when the walker arrives. Whenever they see Sid, they’re butts start wiggling and you can see the happiness. That’s how we know we’ve got the right person caring for our pups.

There are few words that truly do justice in describing Sid’s expertise and capabilities as an animal behaviorist. His professionalism and his reliability as a caretaker are unmatched and, perhaps most importantly, Sid is effective. It is this efficacy that, in no exaggeration, changed my and my dog, Ruby’s, lives.
Ruby is a four-year-old Plott Hound/American Pit Bull Terrier mix, rescued in August of 2011. Ruby is a great dog. She is beautiful, intelligent, sweet, and loyal. Ruby is also nervous, has serious separation anxiety, horrible leash manners, leash aggression, and an uncontrollable prey drive. Having worked with five trainers before finding Sid, I was simply trying to come to terms with the fact that I had a “problem dog.” I would simply manage with the destruction and the accidents. We found other alternatives for exercise (renting private facilities), covered the outskirts of our yard with fox urine (yep!) to deter rabbits, took walks at odd hours to lessen the number of dogs we had to dodge like land mines (not to mention other small animals), washed and re-washed the carpet, kept the trashcan outside, and barricaded any and all doors to bedrooms and bathrooms when leaving the house.
See? We were managing. Right? Wrong. Enter Sid.
I contacted Sid solely for the purpose of walking. I had used walkers in the past and was relatively shocked at their limited experience, especially when combined with the potential liability of mishandled dog-to-dog interaction. These dog walkers could not handle her power or problems, but it was clear from the start that Sid was not “just a dog walker.” We met, and Sid’s understanding of canines was immediately apparent. He promised to provide vigorous walks that would satisfy Ruby mentally, physically, and spiritually each time he visited and that his walking style would spawn organic behavior improvement. He thought he could eliminate Ruby’s dog aggression simply through the dog walking service and promised, at a minimum, to teach me how to handle Ruby to properly manage her aggression. I could have cried.
To prove his assertions, he took Ruby for a trial walk around the neighborhood. During the trial walk, I trailed behind Sid and Ruby with my jaw on the ground. There was an immediate, measurable change in her demeanor and behavior. As we walked briskly down the street, Ruby largely stayed at Sid’s side- far more than she had ever done for me,- or anyone- and we even passed- actually walked passed, not around, not lunging, barking, or walking on hind legs- a squirrel. I was ecstatic and hopeful, but truthfully- still a little skeptical having worked unsuccessfully with so many trainers before. Ruby had made strides previously, only to regress minutes, hours, or days later.
Over the next five months, Sid walked Ruby twice a day for 30 minutes, 4-5 times a week. After each visit, Sid left comprehensive notes of visit timing, walking distance, interactions and eliminations. Each morning, I left the house relaxed and confident that Ruby was in good hands- a far cry from anxiety ridden outings prior- and returned home to fewer and fewer accidents, less and less destruction, and a tired and happy dog. Too frequently, dog walking companies use rotating walkers- resulting in inconsistent handling- many of whom are individuals with little experience or training, which, for any dog, can result in unsafe outings. In contrast, Sid is a one-man show bringing over ten years of experience to the end of the leash, and providing consistent, reliable and comprehensive care. There is no better alternative.
Ruby today is a different dog than she was when we first met Sid, and I am a different dog owner. She has gone from a nervous, anxiety ridden, leash aggressive, dog with an insatiable prey drive, to a confident, collected, relaxed and controlled companion. Ruby and I now walk with a slack leash at “normal” times of day and pass other dogs and critters with ease. No more private yards, no more dawn and midnight walks. Accident-induced carpet washing is far less and, while we still keep the trashcan outside- Ruby’s destruction has been eliminated- having been replaced with safe, mentally and physically challenging exercise. Sid effectively trained me as much as trained Ruby. His means of dog handling are straight forward, effective, and reproducible. Just as Ruby needed to learn to behave, I needed to learn how to handle her in such a way that I was not feeding her misbehavior, increasing her anxiety, and amplifying distractions. Ruby was in part nervous, distracted, and aggressive, because I was allowing her to be and she thought she needed to be. Sid taught me that dog ownership, in every sense of the work, is a two-way street.
This testimonial is a far cry from truly explaining Sid’s impact on our lives. That said, if there is anything I can leave you with- call Sid! Whether you think you have the best dog or the worst dog, small behavioral issues or life-altering problems- Sid can help your dog be the best dog it can be and you- the best dog owner you can be.

I wasn’t sure if my chihuahua could get past his fear aggression issues that he has had for 8 years. One visit with Sidney and we were able to work through them and now can walk down the street peacefully! Sidney’s approach is calm and loving. If you need help with your dog don’t wait as long as I did to call Sidney.

Sid Velander of Have Leash Will Travel has been walking and caring for my two dogs for nearly two years. When I am at work, Sid comes to my home, gives my dogs a great half-hour walk, gives them treats, and writes a thorough report. Sid has also provided training for one of my dogs, gotten both dogs to walk well for me, and provides ongoing training tips. In addition, Sid has provided excellent dog and cat sitting services on short notice when I’ve had to travel out of town. When dog and cat sitting, Sid provides my dogs with three walks each day, feeds and brushes them, takes care of my cat’s litter box, and feeds and cares for him.
I can’t say enough about Sid’s professionalism, timeliness, expertise, and compassion for my dogs and cat. Sid has a passion for understanding dogs and constantly hones his professional expertise. Sid’s dog walking services are inextricably tied to his training expertise. He did a fantastic job training one of my dogs, but, in the best sense, is training both dogs each time he walks and takes care of them. He spots behavioral issues before they become a problem and solves behavioral issues when they have. His fees are really reasonable, especially given his professionalism. Best of all, my dogs love Sid!

My husband and I have a 2 ½ year old German Shepherd dog named Otto. Otto has epilepsy which started just over a year ago. We didn’t travel at all at first, but with all of our family out of state, we couldn’t avoid it forever – nor could we live without a vacation ever again! We agonized over who could watch Otto, and determined that we wanted an in-home pet sitter for Otto. Our first experience with another pet sitter was a disaster. So, our local pet food store recommended Sid, and I also knew dog owners who used him for training their larger dogs. When we met Sid, and his dog Isis, we were immediately impressed with how he was “all about the dogs”. Sid has a very calm nature, and sized Otto up quickly and accurately. Otto can have some separation anxiety or get very protective of our home, but with Sid, he is calm, secure and happy. We feel completely at ease leaving Otto with Sid and his dog, Isis. We know he is being cared for as if he was his own. Sid just loves spending time with the “pups”, and Otto gets just as much attention as if we were home, maybe even more! One of our favorite things about Sid’s in-home pet sitting service is the nightly email giving us a full update on the day. We know that Otto has taken his medicine, if his eating and digestion are on track and what quirky or cute things he did that day. Sid loves his work, he is extremely professional and caring and we just can’t say enough good things about him and the services he provides!

I adopted my dog Winter in July of 2008 and have been using Sid since a few days after I adopted her. I have Sid walk Winter 5 days a week and sometimes extra if something comes up. When I first called Sid about setting up walks he offered to come out to my place and meet me and my pup. He made himself available at a time that was perfectly convenient for me and came over to meet Winter. Winter is a large Great Dane mix who I adopted from a shelter when she was about 8 months old. She came from a terrible background of abuse, malnourishment, and various other health problems. Winter had severe anxiety and fear of basically everything around her. Her social issues, and other health problems, didn’t make leaving to go to work all day very easy.
This is where Sid comes in. Within 2 weeks of Sid walking Winter she was no longer pulling me on the leash, her anxiety induced diarrhea was gone, and she was already starting to be less timid. Like all dogs Winter has had her share of diarrhea bouts and Sid knew all the tricks. Sid had me feeding Winter canned pumpkin and it worked like a charm, no more diarrhea. The vet would have charged a ton for this advice. Sid has a dog training background so he explained to me how important it is for dogs to actually go on walks rather than just run at the dog park. I now walk Winter off leash and she is perfectly behaved. In fact I get many compliments about how well behaved she is for such a large dog. This has a lot to do with the amount of time, care and patience Sid put in to helping me train a very needy dog.
Sid is not only great with my dog but he also runs a very dependable and honest business. Sid takes his job very seriously and makes sure his customers are happy. I have called Sid to come early if Winter wouldn’t go to the bathroom for me before I left for work. I have also called Sid to come a second time if I knew I wouldn’t be home from work until late in the evening. Sid understands the times that he needs to be available for his customers and does a great job of doing just that, being available. Sid has gone above and beyond in his visits with Winter such as alerting me to the front door of my building being left open all the time. I highly doubt a random dog walker off of Craigslist would be kind enough to do this.
All in all there are a lot of options for your pets during your work hours but not all the options are going to be the full package. Trustworthy, knowledgeable, flexible, dependable, just to name a few of Sid’s traits. Sid’s prices are right and he gives your pet a level of care above and beyond what you will get anywhere else. Having a dog is not an easy feat so let Sid make it a little easier and less stressful. I would be glad to speak to any future customers who have any questions regarding Sid’s service. I can’t say enough good things!

My husband and I adopted a 5 year old Yorkie named Kiki in December 2012. Kiki has leash aggression and one of the requirement of the adoption was that we had to have a fenced yard so that she wouldn’t need to be taken on walks. We met Sid just a few weeks after getting Kiki and we knew he would be perfect for Kiki and she would be taking MANY walks. We have always known that Sid would take care of Kiki like she was his own and also teach her how to behave properly on their walks. Kiki looks forward to her walks with Sid and gets excited when he comes to get her. We love that he would leave a daily report on their visit and were VERY happy when we saw that she behaved when other dogs came by. We have truly appreciated Sid’s professionalism and his kindness to Kiki. We were very lucky to have him take care of Kiki.

We feel very fortunate to have found Sid to walk our dog, Boomer, on a daily basis. While we are at work he walks Boomer multiple blocks, plays with him, befriends him, and leaves us a daily note of his behavior and temperament. Sid taught Boomer how to walk and behave properly while on the leash within days. Sid also trained Boomer. Not only did he work with our dog one-on-one, but he worked with us as well. Sid taught us how to properly walk, reprimand, and praise Boomer. Because of Sid we have a wonderful Pit Bull that listens and is a joy to have in and out of the house. He has made it such a joy to walk Boomer around the city. Sid is very dependable, reliable, and flexible and we highly recommend him to anyone looking for a walker, trainer, or sitter.

Hiring Sid to walk our puppy, Leah, was one of the best decisions we made for her. Sid started walking Leah when she was just a few months old and he walked her twice a day until we moved out of Chicago. Sid also occasionally stayed with Leah at our apartment when we went out of town. He was always professional and reliable, and it is obvious that he understands dogs. Even more importantly, we could tell that Sid really cared about Leah and she loved and trusted him (made clear by the onset of full body wiggles every time she saw him). Sid taught Leah to walk properly on a leash and often gave us helpful tips on behaviors or health issues he noticed. We have tried a couple different dog walkers since we moved, and no one compares.

After having talked about adopting a dog for many years, my husband and I decided that April of 2008 was the time. We went to the shelter many times and finally decided on an adorable year old pup with an under bite. After bringing Mani back to our condo and spending a few days with him, we quickly realized that we were in over our heads and felt frustrated and confused. Just days after adopting Mani, my husband was asked to go away on a business trip, and I was left as the sole caretaker for Mani, this included walking (or being pulled), navigating the elevator, navigating around other dogs, navigating around humans, and administering medicine for kennel cough. I was overwhelmed and began to question our decision to adopt. After a particularly frustrating walk, I got into the elevator and met Sid. He was interested in what kind of dog Mani was and was amused by his under bite. Sid must have recognized my frustration because he shared that he was a dog trainer and gave me his card. I immediately went inside and sent him an email sharing my frustration, concern, and wondered if there was anything that could be done to ensure a happy life for both our family and Mani. Sid immediately responded with encouraging words and began educating me on the mental and physical needs of a dog. He ended the email with his phone number and asked to call if I needed anything.
Later that evening, I was administering or attempting to administer Mani’s medicine and so far, the game was not going very well. As I tried my best to hide Mani’s pill in cheese, liver paste, bread, wet food, etc. he would eat the food, find the pill and spit it out every time. It was 10:30 at night and was in tears when I sent Sid a text message asking if he was available to help me, moments later he was standing in my condo. With minimal introduction, Sid sat on the floor of my kitchen and waited until Mani came over to say hello. When he did, Sid gave him a little pat on the head, opened his mouth and popped the pill right in! Mani was stunned, game over! It was at that moment that I realized we needed Sid in our lives.
When my husband returned from his business trip, we met with Sid and began the process of training both Mani and ourselves. Sid met with us a few times a week to show us how to reinforce the training that Sid was teaching Mani. Unlike other trainers, Sid is focused not only on the dog, but on helping the owner become more confidant and understanding of the dogs needs. Soon we were using commands and seeing results. Mani was much less stressed during our walks and seemed to be adjusting to life with our family. Sid was not only our trainer, but also became our dog walker. This provided Mani with continued reinforcement during his afternoon walks and we felt good knowing that we could trust our dog with Sid while we were gone at work. Sid became an integral part of our family and we began to enjoy being dog owners so much so, that we adopted another dog, Dexter. Sid also trained Dex and taught us how to walk two dogs at once and remain in control. We continue to reinforce Sid’s training and often receive compliments from others about how well-behaved and under control the boys are. While we still have our challenges, we’re confident that we know how to take control of the situation and elicit a positive outcome for ourselves and our dogs.
My husband and I have become passionate animal adoption advocates, but we are also passionate about training animals to ensure that they are happy and healthy members of any family. Sid is an amazing trainer, he is calm, confident and approaches training with a realistic approach for both owner and dog. I’ve shared his name and information with many dog owners and hope that they will have the opportunity to know what it is like to have a dog who listens when you give a command, walks nicely, and works for praise and few treats!

I have had Sid with Have Leash Will Travel working with my dog, Molly, for 3 years now. Molly is a black Lab about 65 lbs, who has special needs. Molly was diagnosed with an autoimmune skin disease called pemphigus back in 2004. My concern with getting a dog walker at first was would the person be understanding or able to assist at times when medication schedules required doses in the afternoon. Sid is very understanding and knowledgeable of the condition and its symptoms.
Sid and Molly get along great, and Sid takes great care of her. Sid has also been great with last-second requests and changes in schedule. He is very flexible and accommodating to his client. Sid has always been very respectful of my house and belongings and very neat and clean when outside conditions are messy. He has also taken care of the occasional “accidents” in the house with no fuss.
I have recommended Sid and Have Leash Will Travel to several of my friends and neighbors. I will continue to do so because of the high quality of service and the great deal of passion Sid shows for his work and his clients. Molly and I are very thankful for Sid and his care and help with Molly and her day-to-day needs.

My wife and I have been using Sid to walk our dogs for more than 3 years now. We have two large, high-energy Lab mixes that need to be walked every day. When they were puppies, we had another dog walker that came to the house each day, but they ended up walking her, rather than she walking them. When we switched to Sid, he trained them (and us) how to walk without pulling. The walks we take with our dogs are much more enjoyable for all of us now!
During the 3-plus years Sid has been walking our dogs, he’s become a good and trusted family friend for us. He watches our dogs and house-sits for us when we travel. It is a tremendous relief for us to know when we are out of town that our dogs are perfectly safe and expertly cared for. Plus, Sid has always been willing to help us out with a last-minute request to walk our dogs if we have to stay late at work or are otherwise unable to get home on time to take them our on our own. He is completely reliable and makes our satisfaction his top priority.
— Ray L.
Sid has been the caretaker for my two dogs for almost three years. He is reliable and trustworthy. Sid has helped my anxiety-driven male dog become more socialized and walk with more confidence. I not only trust him with my precious pooches but in my home on a day-to-day basis. I would refer him to anyone looking for a caring dog walker/caretaker.
— Christy M.
As new dog owners, we were impressed with Sid’s knowledge and willingness to help and offer advice. We welcomed his guidance and so appreciated his educated opinions on any questions or concerns we had. From the first day, we have been completely comfortable having Sid in our home, caring for our dog. His number one priority is to leave us with a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog.
